Jalen Neal Death and Obituary, Victim Identified in Fatal Car-Train Crash South of Downtown Salt Lake City

Authorities have identified the victim who was killed in a car versus train crash during an Uber ride near downtown Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City officials were called at approximately 7:45 a.m. near West Temple and 700 South on September 14, 2022. According to information provided by a Utah Transit Authority spokesperson, an Uber traveling southbound on West Temple allegedly ran a red light and struck a TRAX train headed eastbound on 700 South.

The person killed in the crash was identified Friday by Salt Lake City police as 28-year-old Jalen Neal. Officials said Neal sustained critical injuries during the collision. Officials attempted life-saving measures but he died on scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that a Chevrolet Bolt’s Uber driver struck a UTA train as it crossed 700 South. Police said the Uber driver was cooperating with the investigation.

Officials said the Uber driver was uninjured. An investigation into the crash was still ongoing. Identity of the driver was not released.

An Uber spokesperson, in a statement to 2News, said: “Our hearts are with the rider’s loved ones during their time of mourning. We have deactivated the driver and we stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”
