The actress, who was introduced as AT&T salesman “Lily Adams” in the media company’s ad, spoke to Bilson and her co-host Olivia Allen about her professional and personal life. When Vayntrub talks about her activism and ideas to overthrow Roe v. Wade, who spoke openly about having an abortion at 22.
“It never occurred to me that I would keep this child. There was no part of me that wanted to weigh the options,” she said. “I dated my first boyfriend out of college, he was an amazing guy, I love him, still my best friend, but won’t be my guy forever. My job doesn’t even make enough to keep up My life at the time, not to mention the huge financial cost of having a baby, and I never felt like it was my baby.”
She went on to explain how she feels “a seed has been planted in me” rather than feeling connected to the embryo, which she considers a “polyp that needs to be removed.” Luckily, she was supported by her mother and mother’s health insurance, and went to the doctor, who gave her an abortion under anesthesia.
“I’m damn fine, I didn’t think twice. It was really like having a cyst removed and I had cramps for two weeks and I never thought about it,” she said. “I don’t think about it until I think about women who are in this situation and have no choice.”
Vayntrub has written extensively about her abortion experience, urging the protection of reproductive rights, when she writes first-person for The Daily Beast in February 2022.
“This is not an exercise, folks. All of us who have wombs will soon be stripped of our constitutional right to abortion. Forced pregnancy and childbirth sounds medieval — as medieval as clandestine, unsafe abortion. Yet here we are,” she wrote at the time. “The life I know and the motherhood I know is shaped by my right to make decisions about my body. In this way, my birth story is inseparable from my abortion story.”
