Public Holiday victoria 2022 september 22nd, National day of mourning Australia

Next Thursday’s national day of mourning for the death of Queen Elizabeth II will be declared a one-off public holiday in Australia.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the ABC that September 22 will be a bank holiday to coincide with the Queen’s memorial service.

“This will be a unique national holiday where people can pay tribute to the passing of Queen Elizabeth,” Albanese said.

Mr Albanese said he was writing to advise state and territory leaders.

Mr Albanese said the government would also make up for the four-day suspension of parliament due to the Queen’s death.

“It’s hard to imagine the kind of contentious activity happening in our parliament…so I think it’s appropriate that the agreement calls for an automatic cancellation,” he said.

He said one day would be dedicated to the council’s mourning.

Mr Albanese went on to pay tribute to the queen in an interview with ABC ahead of her son’s announcement as king later today.

He said one of the reasons the Queen was so respected and unwavering in Australia was because she had evolved as a monarch.

“She made it clear that Australia is responsible for our own destiny,” he said.

“At some point, such as during the referendum, she was not involved. She said she would respect the Australian people’s achievements in defining the way forward.”
