Kenyan minister Dr. Monica Juma replaced the Cabinet Secretary of Defense position with Energy and Petroleum. She was born in 1963.
Juma served as the MFA’s Principal Secretary from January 2016 to February 2018 before being appointed to his current position in February of that year.
Juma served as the Ministry of Defense’s Principal Secretary before starting work in the Ministry of Interior.
Juma earned her BA, MA, and Doctorate from University of Oxford. Additionally, she studied at University of Nairobi for her Bachelor and Master degrees.
Juma has worked extensively in the diplomatic field; she served as Kenya’s concurrent ambassador to Ethiopia, Djibouti, the African Union, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. She worked out of Addis Ababa as a ambassador for each of these organizations.
She served as Principal Secretary of the Kenya Ministry of Defense from June 27, 2013 to when she was moved to the Kenya Ministry of the Interior.
Juma is a senior research fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the African Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University in Washington DC in the United States. Juma has written and published numerous works related to her field of study.
